The Strawberry Fair

Since 2001 a small film festival has been held at the Strawberry Fair, the reason for this is to enable small time directors to be able to show their work to a massive crowd. This years festival has been cancelled, this would mean that the directors would not be able to distribute their work. However, the Strawberry shorts film festival wil be shown at the Cambridge City Council's event called 'The Big Weekend' on the 10th & 11th of July

A Close Resemblance

The Junction Young Ambassadors is a project formed by the Junction to help make the Junction a more 'Youth Friendly Environment'. They have been running since march in 2009 and have completed a lot of projects. one of these is working with architecture graduates to design a new foyer for the junction building.

Here is their website.

Who was involved

These are all of the organisations involved in our project, this project could not have been so successful if it wasn't from the help of them all.

Promo Advert

It took me a while to find a promotional advert, I had google searched and youtube searched for promotional adverts I didn't have any luck. But then I remember a video I had seen during the cinema adverts, I started to search for 02 celebrity walk and I found this video.

This promo is very simple yet it does what it is meant to do. It shows you what stars you can see at the O2 arena, it promotes them going to walk on stage. It is a long build up between their dressing rooms and the stage but this is used to build up tenstion something that I think works realy well in an advert.

This is how our promo should be, simple and not rushed. If we keep it simple and work on that then we can start to make it look nicer.

Budget

Simon Bates, our client, has acquired £3000 from skillset for a budget for this project.

Travel £ 1000 Hire coach
Accommodation £20 per head for o/night at bournemouth, based on staying in a hostel £400
Food £20 per head £400
Uni fees £500 pay for student mentors from Bournemouth
Samba tuition £260
Total £2560
This is the original budget that we had been set but costs actualy came in a lot lower than this. The coach only cost £675 this was a saving of £325 and the food at bournemouth only cost £120 rather than £400. We also didn't stay over night at bournemouth meaning that was another saving of £400. Al in all that is a saving of £845 meaning the total cost came to £1715.

This means we now have some extra resources to use when it comes to our next project.

Rough Cut Feedback

Feedback from Simon the Client
-Live footage of The Fiver
-What the requirements are for getting in
-What you get if your band is accepted
-How to apply
-It must look contemporary
-Appealing to the 14 – 17 age group
-Supply all the relevant information
-Good use of the bands, drops me straight into the evening
-Does not show entry requirements
-Mentions financial incentives but not the opportunities of working on large stage with sound and techs
- would be great to include this in the final cut
-Left me slightly confused
-Looks modern
-Great editing and speed
-Yes but does not include too much of the younger band(s)
-Unsure the ticker tape is clear enough, moves too quickly, unclear

Feedback from class mates
-text effect great Idea but think about using a diffrent font maybe
-Maybe more footage of what the bands throught of there experience
-Overall quite good and effective but needs a 'WOW' factor

After having received this feedback it is quite clear on what we need to do, we need to include more information about the actual fiver, all the financial information how you can get involved in the fiver and be apart of it, what happens when you are apart of it. We need to mention the fact that you get to work with professionals in the industry and you get to perform on a big stage in front of hundreds of people.

They said that it looks quite good and we are on the right track to creating a good promo, we just need to improve on these few things.

What has my job been so far in the group?

First off a few of use had been given then task og sorting though all the footage of each camera, I was given the task to sort through footage B. Write dwon what i think is usefeul and what I think isn't, what the shots contain etc.

Once we were put into our promo groups, my role has been helping out with editing alongside Sam & Loz giving ideas on what would look good etc. I also was put in charge of creating the titles on After Effects, I created a nice simple ripply effect that looked really nice.

First version of the promo video

This is the rough version of the promo vidoe edited by Me, Loz & Sam. The titles were created by me in aftereffects.

Although we were on a very small time constraint I think this turned out pretty well. It gets across the main points we are trying to feed into our audience, that this is a great place to do a gig wether you are starting up or are famous. It straight away starts with a live performance very punchy and quick which is good for keeping the interest of our viewers. We used the song 'Till Death Let Us Dance' by Operation FM, we didn't have the full version of the song from the live footage so we then got the recored version of the song and layered it in and blended it in with out footage so it fitted.

Why I chose the Junction

I have decided to collaborate with the Junction on this for several reasons. The first being that we have worked with them before on other projects and I feel this means that we already have a foundation for communicating well with them. It will also help my project due to the fact that they work well with the communities surrounding Cambridge. They often offer young or up and coming bands oportunities to get popular by performing shows. This engagement with the community is just what I'm looking for in a company to work with.

They also offered me the best pitch for a project. If I work in partnership with the Junction then I will get the ability to make a video. I am much more enthusiastic about video making than the other projects that I could possibly get involved with such as working for Shakin' Moo's where they wanted me to make fliers for their business. I feel that I will get a lot more out of this project if I am able to make a video and this is what collaboration with the Junction will mean.

Another Opportunity

Whilst in Shakin' Moo's today with Alex and Matt Hornby of my class, we were approached by the manager to help them out with advertising their company. What they would like from us 3 are posters, flyers, table designs and help on promotions. This is a great opportunity for us because we can get more marks on our coursework with research and it gives us the chance to promote a different company in another way other than a promotional video, and this is good for Moo's because it will make them more popular and people will be more aware of who they are what they are and where they are.

Who we have chosen

We have decided to go with the Junction as our company of choice to work for, they have infact approached us before to create a promotional video for them, this was when we was at Homerton showing off our work Simon had come up to me a couple others and discussed with us his job and we discussed our course and he got really interested in us thereafter. Since hat we have worked with them before on our music videos and know the staff and can work well with them. I think this will be a great opportunity for us and for them.

what I could do for the Cambridge Picture House

What I could do for the Junction

For the Junction we could do the same as for the corn exchange except I think that we would be able to find more stuff for us to do, the Junction has a venue called the Fiver which is where you get to come to the junction one night for £5 if you are 18 and under, the venue contains a lot of bands from certain age ranges. The bands that play are unsigned ones and are new and upcoming, this means there is the possibility of advertising this venue to bands with a promotional video.

What I could do for the corn exchange

If we was to work with the corn exchange and do my interaction project with them, then we could create some promotional videos for bands that would want to play there ad give them information on how they could get to play at this great venue. We could create a bunch of posters and flyers advertising certain venues that are going on at this place.

I think that this could be a good place to work and get experiance but I don't think there would be a substantial amount of work for us to do with them.

Shakin' Moo's

Shakin' Moo's is a fairly new business in cambridge its makes all different flavours of milkshakes and is aimed at the students in cambridge. Being a new company I think they could use some publicity, they would be good to work with and is relatively close by.

The Arts Picture House

We have already worked with the picture house on our work experiance, this didn't turn out so well. I think that it would be worth giving these guys another go at it. Being a picture house for low budget cinema and up and coming directors, it would be a great opportunity to great a promo video for them

Soul Tree

The soul tree is another club in cambridge which means it holds the same problem as the Fez in the fact that we could only work within its premises if we are 18, so only I and a few others could do this.

The Fez

The Fez is a night club in cambridge, it's most popular event is fat poppadaddys. This would be a great event to work on and try and give it more publicity with a promotional video. It being a night club though only a few of us would be able to work within there.

The Corn Exchange

The corn exchange is a much larger venue than the Junction it doesn't have as many events going on but it does tend to get more popular bands because of it being a lot larger. This means that they wont need much help with publicity due to having bigger named artists.

The Junction

The Junction is a venue which we could work with easily. We had already worked with them on our music video projects in using their stage and lighting for our filming. The Junction is also very close to our close to our college making it easily accessible.

Organisations I could work with.

1. Cambridge Corn Exchange
2. The Junction
3. Cambridge Arts House
4. Addenbrookes Hospital
5. Soul Tree
6. Vue Cinema
7. Fez
8. Shakin Moo's

Notes taken from meeting with Simon Bates 2

This is our second meeting with Simon bates, he was talking to us about the core product and how important it is. I agree with him completly, here is what he had to say about it.

Core product.

Interviews with staff, images or videos of staff and students working together. The basic expectation you want from a product.

The wow factor is untangable it's what is sort of like a bonus or a must for the core product. If when buying a hat, you but it so it keeps you warm that is your core epectation the core prodeuct. If it looks good then that is the wow factor

Notes taken from meeting with Simon Bates

Simon Bates from the junction came in to have a meeting with us about how we could work with him and the Junction on reating a promotional video. Here are the notes I had taken from him.

Skillset promo to be five to ten minutes long. The junction promo to the about 3 and a half minutes long to try and keep it interesting. Quality footage of the fiver event, not much bother with the fact if we voice over the live footage. Bands get scouted or get recomended.

Use Gary's contact details maybe so bands can give Gary their details. We go to bournemouth on the 22nd of febuary. Have hopefuly both videos donw by end of febuary.
